In addition to “normal air freight,” is there also air freight with direct flights or express service?
The air freight industry offers various service levels that differ significantly in speed, cost, and flexibility. While standard air freight is already much faster than sea or ground transport, specialized express and direct flight services have been established for time-critical shipments.
Standard Air Freight as the Basic Service
Regular air freight utilizes the existing network of cargo airlines with their established routes and hub airports. Your shipment is consolidated with other cargo pieces and transported through hubs like Frankfurt, Amsterdam, or Dubai.
This method is cost-effective but typically requires 3-7 days for international transport, as waiting times for connecting flights and handling processes must be factored in.
This option is:
- cost-effective
- reliable for routine deliveries
- ideal when truly time-critical shipping is not required
Express Air Freight for Time-Critical Shipments
Express services offer significantly reduced transit times through prioritized handling in all process steps. When you urgently need spare parts for a production line shutdown, express air freight can reduce delivery time to 24-48 hours. These services often use the first available flights and receive priority handling at airports.
Express processing includes accelerated customs clearance, reduced handling times, and often extended service hours at the destination. However, you pay a significant premium for this speed – express services can cost two to five times more than standard air freight.
Direct Flight Services for Maximum Speed
Direct flight services, also called charter air freight, offer the fastest but most expensive transport option. A dedicated aircraft is used exclusively for your shipment or in combination with a few other time-critical cargo pieces. A direct flight from Munich to New York can have your goods at their destination within 12-16 hours, including all handling processes.
This option is particularly worthwhile for high-value or extremely time-critical goods.
A pharmaceutical company transporting temperature-controlled medications, or an automotive manufacturer with production-critical components use such services when standard transport would be too slow.
Advantages:
- no intermediate stops
- maximum control over time and route
Same-Day Delivery and AOG Services – For Emergencies
For absolute emergencies, specialized providers offer same-day services.
These can even be used in “Aircraft on Ground” (AOG) situations when a passenger aircraft must remain grounded due to a defective part. In such cases, the service provider organizes direct transport of the required spare part within hours.
The costs for such emergency services can amount to several thousand euros, even for small shipments. Nevertheless, this can be cost-effective when the alternative would mean production shutdowns or flight cancellations.
Consolidated Express Services
As a middle ground between standard and charter services, consolidated express options have been established. Multiple time-critical shipments from various customers are combined on the same express flight. This significantly reduces costs compared to a full charter while substantially increasing speed over standard air freight.
Result:
- faster than standard
- significantly cheaper than full charter
Cost-Benefit Analysis
Choosing the right service level requires careful consideration between costs and time savings.
While standard air freight suffices for routine shipments, express services can offer significant cost advantages over production downtime for time-critical deliveries.
A machinery manufacturer whose export business depends on on-time delivery often deliberately invests in express services to avoid contract penalties or customer dissatisfaction.
Consider before each shipment:
- How urgent is the time pressure?
- What does a delivery delay cost (e.g., production downtime)?
- What is the budget?
Booking and Availability
Express and direct flight services usually require early booking and detailed advance information about your shipment. Capacities are limited, especially during peak times or on heavily trafficked routes.
Freight forwarders with good relationships with airlines can often secure space even at short notice, but at correspondingly higher prices.
Tips for smooth processing:
- early booking (especially before holidays)
- complete shipment information in advance
- close coordination with your freight forwarder
Special Requirements for Different Services
Depending on the chosen service level, different requirements apply for packaging, documentation, and lead times. Express shipments often require more detailed advance declaration, while charter services may require special cargo securing. Temperature-controlled transports or dangerous goods often require additional certifications for express services.
Expect requirements in the areas of:
- packaging and labeling
- documentation and advance declarations
- certifications for dangerous goods or refrigerated cargo
Recommendations for Service Selection
Standard, express, or direct flight – each option has its price and benefit.
For plannable transports, standard is sufficient. For production bottlenecks or emergencies, express or charter services are often the better choice. Your freight forwarder helps you make the right decision quickly and safely.
Tip: Clarify scenarios, prices, and availability with your freight forwarder in advance. This way, you can act quickly and efficiently in an emergency.
