Can dangerous goods be shipped for AOG situations?
Yes, dangerous goods can definitely be shipped for AOG situations, but this adds significant complexity to an already urgent process. In aviation, many essential aircraft parts are classified as dangerous goods under International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations, making this capability crucial for effective AOG support.
Aircraft parts commonly classified as dangerous goods include lithium batteries used in emergency systems, hydraulic fluids, compressed gases for pneumatic systems, oxygen generators, fire extinguisher cartridges, and various chemicals used in aircraft systems. Even something as seemingly simple as a spare tire for landing gear might contain compressed gases that require special handling.
The shipping process for dangerous goods requires specialized expertise and certification. Licensed dangerous goods handlers must properly classify each item according to UN specifications, select appropriate packaging that meets strict testing standards, and prepare detailed documentation that includes material safety data sheets, shipper’s declarations, and emergency response information. This paperwork tells everyone in the shipping chain exactly what they’re handling and what to do if something goes wrong.
Processing times for dangerous goods are typically longer than standard AOG shipments because of these additional requirements. Where a normal AOG part might be processed and shipped within 2-3 hours, dangerous goods might require 4-6 hours just for proper documentation and packaging preparation. However, experienced AOG providers maintain stocks of certified packaging materials and have trained staff available around the clock to minimize these delays.
Different transportation methods have varying capabilities for dangerous goods. Commercial passenger flights have strict limitations on what dangerous goods they can carry and in what quantities. Charter cargo aircraft offer more flexibility but at higher costs. Ground transport might be the only option for certain highly regulated materials that cannot fly on passenger aircraft at all.
